What is Computer Security?
A: Computer Security can be defined in many ways. Writing a single definition may not fulfil our goal to completely explain this term. Here are few definitions from the web, using which we will try to figure out the exact image behind the term "Computer Security".
- According to Microsoft (ref: www.microsoft.com/security/glossary.mspx), Computer Security can be defined as "The protection of information assets through the use of technology, processes, and training."
- southportllc.com (ref: www.southportllc.com/glossary.htm) defines Computer Security as, "Measures and controls that ensure the security and availability of the information processed, stored, and transmitted by a computer."
- wikipedia.org (ref: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_security) standardizes Computer Security as "Computer security is the effort to create a secure computing platform, designed so that agents (users or programs) can only perform actions that have been allowed. This involves specifying and implementing a security policy. The actions in question can be reduced to operations of access, modification and deletion. Computer security can be seen as a subfield of security engineering, which looks at broader security issues in addition to computer security."
- utmb.edu (ref: www.utmb.edu/is/security/glossary.htm) defines Computer Security as "Those measures, procedures, or controls which provide an acceptable degree of safety of information resources from accidental or intentional disclosure, modification, or destruction."
Is Computer Security required?
A: To understand the requirment of Computer Security, first of all we need to understand couple of terms like:
Computer Security Exploit
An exploit is a common term in the computer security community to refer to a piece of software that takes advantage of a bug, glitch or vulnerability, leading to privilege escalation or denial of service on a computer system.
(ref: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_security_exploit)
Computer Security Intrusion
Any event of unauthorized access or penetration to an automated information system (AIS).
(ref: www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/pubs/compsecurity/glossary.html)
Conclusion
From all above information, it is obvious that we need to take care of Computer Security because of the threats out there on the Internet and other Networks in the form of virus, trojans, spyware, adware, hijacker, keylogger and other malicious tools. This generates a new term named as "Computer Protection" as defined by business-continuity-online.com (ref: www.business-continuity-online.com/Content/Pages/Glossary.aspx), which says, "Computer protection programs are increasingly required as the sophistication of viruses increases along with their frequency. The need for such products is increasing as the threat of unauthorised malicious software grows." and that is why we are here.
